I Live in the Beautiful City of Beijing
I am so lucky to live in Beijing, the amazing capital city of China! Beijing is an incredibly beautiful and exciting place. There is always something new and fun to see or do. Let me tell you all about my wonderful home.
Beijing is a very old city with a rich history that goes back over 3,000 years! There are so many incredible historical sites and landmarks here. One of my favorite places is the Forbidden City. This was the royal palace for emperors during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It has 9,999 rooms and covers an area of 180 acres! That's almost as big as my entire neighborhood.
I love exploring the Forbidden City with my family. We walk through the huge gates and enter a world of beautiful traditional Chinese architecture with yellow glazed tile roofs, red walls, and ornate decorations everywhere. We stroll through the various palace halls and gardens, learning about how the emperors lived. It's almost like travelling back in time! The Forbidden City is so vast that it feels like its own little city inside Beijing.
Another famous landmark is the Great Wall of China, which winds through the mountains north of Beijing. Parts of the Great
Wall are over 2,000 years old! It's incredible to climb up on this massive stone wall and look out over the hills and valleys surrounding it. From up there, you can really picture what it was like when the Great Wall protected ancient China from invaders. My friends and I love hiking along the Great Wall and exploring the old watch towers and battlements.
Of course, one of the most iconic Beijing landmarks is the Temple of Heaven. This stunning temple complex was built in the 1400s for emperors to perform annual ceremonies honoring heaven and praying for good harvests. The main temple building has the most amazing blue tile roof with intricate designs. Every winter there is a park surrounding the Temple where you can go ice skating on the frozen lake. Gliding across the ice with the beautiful Temple in the background is so much fun!
Beijing has many modern attractions too, like the Beijing National Stadium, also known as the \"Bird's Nest\" because of its unique nest-like design. This gigantic sports stadium hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics and the amazing opening ceremonies with fireworks and dancers. I was just a baby then, but my parents have shown me videos and it looked spectacular! The Bird's Nest now hosts concerts, sports games, and other big events.
And I can't forget to mention the amazing museums in Beijing! The Palace Museum, located inside the Forbidden City, houses hundreds of thousands of ancient Chinese artifacts like ceramics, bronzes, calligraphy, and imperial treasures.
Meanwhile, the National Museum of China has exhibits covering 5,000 years of Chinese history and culture. My class goes on field trips to these museums every year and I'm always in awe of the priceless historical objects on display. We are so lucky to have these treasures preserved in Beijing!
Even just walking down the street, Beijing is a fascinating blend of old and new. You'll see traditional hutong alleys with courtyard homes alongside modern skyscrapers and shopping malls. Old men play chess or Chinese checkers in the parks, while young people zip by on electric scooters and bikes. Delicious smells waft from street food vendors selling jianbing crepes, tanghulu candied fruit, and other local snacks.
Speaking of food, the cuisine in Beijing is out of this world! Some of my favorite local dishes are Beijing kaoya or peking duck, shuanyang roujuan which are amazing meat stuffed buns, and jingdezhuanr candied haws that you can buy from street vendors in the winter. We have such amazing choices from hole-in-the-wall noodle shops to fancy restaurant palaces for hot
pot and Imperial cuisine. There are also international foods from all over the world if we want something different. My friends and I love trying new restaurants and foods every week!
Whether you want history, culture, modern amenities, entertainment, or incredible food, Beijing has it all. That's why I love my home city so much. Beijing is always bustling with energy and there are endless new things to discover. Even though I'm just a kid, I feel so lucky to grow up surrounded by the wonders of this amazing city. I can't wait to keep exploring and sharing more stories about beautiful Beijing with you!
