Part I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.
Animals seem to have the sense to eat when they are hungry and they do not eat more than their bodies need. It has been demonstrated that rats will, when given a choice over a period of time , prefer water with vitamins to water without vitamins even though there is no difference in taste or smell between the two water bottles. When a fragrant flavor was added to the vitamin enriched fluid, the rats did seem to develop a taste for it and kept drinking it, even after the vitamins were switched to the clear water. In time, however, they broke the habit and went back to where the necessary vitamins were. In a classic experiment, babies of 6 to 12 months old were placed in a cafeteria feeding arrangement, with a wide selection of baby food before them. They were given whatever food they pointed to or appeared interested in. We are told that at first they showed some unusual eating patterns, but that over a period of time they managed to select well-balanced diet. So, in selecting food, rats and babies do seem to know and act on what’s best for them. Apparently, there is a kind of” body wisdom” , which humans soon lose. Most of us do not eat as wisely as we could. Many of our food preferences are culturally determined and influenced by long-established habits. Some people eat fox, dog and blackbirds, while we eat cows and pigs. So what people eat and how much they eat seem to be greatly influenced by what is going on around them.
1. In the experiment on rats, a fragrant flavor was added to the rat’s drinking water to( ).
A.encourage rats to drink vitamin-enriched water B.find out rats preference in flavor
C.test whether rats know which drink is good for them D.demonstrate that vitamins aretasteless
答案在文章第一段“It has been demonstrated that rats will, when given a choice over a period of time, prefer water with vitamins to water without vitamins even though there is no difference in taste or smell between the two water bottles.”
2. The expression “the habit”(Line 6, Paragraph 1)refers to drinking water which( ).
A.has no smell B.is tasteless C.has vitamins D.is flavored
第一段的最后谈到“When a fragrant flavor was added to the vitamin-enriched fluid, the rats did seem to develop a taste for it and kept drinking it…”
3. According to the passage, adults eating habits differ from those of babies because( ).
A.adults know better than babies what kind of food is good for their health B.adults usually cannot resist the temptation of various delicious foods C.adults’ eating habits are closely related to the social and cultural customs D.adults have more choices of food than babies in eating patterns
和文章的第三段中:“Many of our food preferences are culturally determined and influenced bylong established habits.”
4. The author implied in the passage that most of us( ). A.eat a balanced diet
B.choose the food that is of nutrition
C.have the habits influenced by the surroundings D.like to eat the food with a fragrant flavor
根据文章的最后一句:“What people eat and how much they eat seem to be greatly influenced by what is going on aroundthem.”
5. As far as their eating habits are concerned, babies and rats are similar in that( ).
A.both have the wisdom to choose a balanced diet B.both prefer flavored food and drink
C.both have the same eating patterns
D.both develop a taste for the same kinds of flavors
和第三段的第一句话:“So,in selecting food, rats and babies do seem to know and act on what’sbest for them.Apparently, there is a kind of’body wisdom’which humans soon lose.”
“Equal pay for equal work “is a phrase used by the American women who feel that they are unfairly treated by society. They say it is not right for women to be paid less than men for the same work. Some people say men have more duties than women. A married man is thought to earn money to support his family and to make the important decision, so it is right for them to be paid more. Some are even against married women working at all. When wives go out to work, they say, the home and children are given no attention to. If women are encouraged by equal pay to take full-time jobs, they will be unable to do the things they are best at doing: making a nice home and bringing up children. Women who disagree say they want to escape from the limited place which society wishes them to fill and to have freedom to choose between work and home life, or a mixture of the two. Women have the right not only to equal pay but also to equal chances.
6. The women use the phrase “equal pay for equal work”to ask society to( ). A.pay men less than women B.give women harder work
C.pay men and women the same amount of money for the same work D.pay people more who do harder work
7. Some people believe that( ). A.women can’t do what men can
B.men have to work much harder than women C.men can earn money more easily than women D.men’s duties are different from women’s

8. Some people holding even stronger opinions say that( ). A.women should be kind to their husbands B.women are too weak to take full-time jobs C.home is the best pace for women
D.women should only take part-time jobs
9. The women who disagree say that( ).
A.women need chances to go out of the home more often
B.women want more freedom in deciding what kind of life they want C.women areno longer interested in taking care of their homes
D.if women are given equal pay, they can do everything instead of men
10. According to this passage some women want to give up( ). A.their present position in society B.their marriage
C.their right to equal pay D.their home life
Trees are useful to man in three important ways: they provide him with wood and other products: they give him shade:and they help to prevent droughts and floods. Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. In his eagerness to make money from trees, he has cut them down inlarge numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had. And besides, he is usually too careless to plant and look after new trees. So the forests slowly disappear. This does not only mean that man will have fewer trees. The results are even more serious: for where there are trees, their roots break up soil — allowing the rain to sink in — and also bind the soil, thus preventing it from being washed away easily: but where there are no trees, the ran falls on hard ground and flows away, causing floods and canying away the rich
top-soil. When all the top-soil is gone, nothing remains but worthless desert.
Two thousand years ago a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire. It set up the empire but, without its trees, its soil became poor and it grew weak. When the empire fell to pieces, the home country found itself faced with floods and starvation.
11. What is the most important service of trees to man according to the passage?
A.They help him make money
B.They give him wood and other products C.They help him prevent droughts and floods D.They give him shade
12. Why do forests in many parts of the world slowly disappear? A.New trees are not looked after properly B.Many trees have been cut down by man

A.Because an empire was set up B.Because the empire fell to pieces C.Because it lost its trees
D.Because too much had been spent on wars
14. Why does land become desert after all trees are cut down? A.Because nothing remains on land except floods
B.Because there are no longer trees to keep the rain and protect the top-soil C.Because too much rain sinks in and washes away the top-soil D.Because roots of the trees break up the soil
15. What does the author tell us in this passage? A.How trees help prevent droughts and floods B.The relationship between trees and man
C.How an empire fell to pieces in ancient times D.A story of trees
Sports and games make our bodies strong, prevent us from getting too fat, and keep us healthy. But these are not their only use. They give us valuable practice in making eyes, brain and muscles work together. In tennis, our eyes see the ball coming, judge its speed and direction and pass this information on to the brain. The brain then has to decide what to do, and to send its orders to the muscles of the arms, legs, and so on, so that the ball is met and hit back where it ought to go. All this must happen with very great speed, and only those who have had a lot of practice at tennis can carry out this complicated chain of events successfully. For those who work with their brains most of the day, the practice of such skills is especially useful. Sports and games are also very useful for character-training. In their lessons at school, boys and girls may learn about such virtues as unselfishness, courage, discipline and love of one’s country: but what is learned in books cannot have the same deep effect on a child’s character as what is learned by experience. The ordinary day-school cannot give much practical training in living, because most of the pupils’ time is spent in classes, studying lessons. So it is what the pupils do in their spare time that really prepares them to take their place in society as citizens when they grow up. If each of them learns to work for his team and not for himself on the football field, he will later find it natural to work for the good of his country instead of only for his own benefit.
16. When we play tennis we have to( ).
A.use, first, our eyes, then the brain and finally the muscles
B.make our eyes, brain and muscles work almost at the same time C.use mainly me arms and legs to hit

第一段第三句说“They give us valuable practice in making eyes, brain and muscles work together.”(体育运动为我们的眼睛、大脑和肌肉一起运动提供了宝贵的练习机会。)
17. The “complicated chain of events” refers to( ). A.the passing of information and making of decisions B.the meeting and hitting back of the ball
C.the coordinated movements of our eyes, brain and muscles D.a lot of practice before playing tennis

Part V Translation (20%)

“Time, “says the proverb, “is money”. This means that every moment well-spent may put some money into our pockets. If our time is usefully employed, it will either turn out some useful and important piece of work which will fetch its price in the market, or 【T1】It will add to our experience and increase our capacities seas to enable us to earn money when the proper opportunity comes. Let those, who think nothing of wasting time, remember this. Our life is nothing more than our time. To kill time is therefore a form of suicide. 【T2】We are shocked when we think of death, and we spare no pains, no trouble, and no expense to preserve life. 【T3】But we are too often indifferent to the loss of an hour or of a day, forgetting that our life is the sum total of the days and of the hours we live. A day or an hour wasted is therefore so much life forfeited. Our life is a brief span measuring some seventy or eighty years in all. But nearly one third of this has to
be spent in sleep: some years have to be spent over our meals: some in making journeys on land and voyages by sea: some in merry-making: some in watching over the sick-beds of our nearest and dearest relatives. Now if all these years were to be deducted from the term over which our life extends, we shall find about twenty or thirty years at our disposal for active work. 【T4】Whoever remembers this can never willingly waste a single moment of his life. All time is precious: but the time of our childhood and of our youth is more precious than any other portion of our existence. 【T5】For those are the periods when alone we can acquire knowledge and develop our capacities. If we allow these morning hours of life to slip away, we shall never be able to recoup the loss. Just as money laid out at interest doubles and trebles itself in time, so the precious hours of childhood and youth, if properly used, will yield us incalculable advantages.
